Defending Bears Ears National Monument

As we’ve written about before, the Bears Ears National Monument is sadly under assault by President Trump and Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke and their zeal to hand over our public lands to the oil and gas industry.

In April, Zinke had the audacity to ask for public comment on a plan to eliminate the National Monument. While an insult to Americans, we took advantage of the opportunity to remind Zinke and his boss how out of touch, corrupt, and insane their plans are. In late May, WildEarth Guardians filed comments in defense of Bears Ears and shared with Zinke nearly 10,000 petition signatures from people urging full and complete protection for this amazing landscape.

This is an unprecedented moment in American history.  There has never been an attempt by a President to eliminate a National Monument. Given Trump’s and Zinke’s opposition to public lands, however, the risk that we may lose Bears Ears is very real. Still, we remain cautiously optimistic.

Thank you to everyone who has spoken out to defend the Bears Ears National Monument. No matter what happens, WildEarth Guardians and many others will do everything possible to ensure this irreplaceable and sacred landscape is not despoiled or degraded. Reverence will prevail, no matter what our crooked politicians say and do.
