WildEarth Guardians led a coalition this week in calling on the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement to plan for the inevitable shutdown of New Mexico’s San Juan coal mine.
As we’ve been writing about frequently, the San Juan mine, which fuels the massive San Juan Generating Station, is running head on into the reality that coal is no longer economically justified.
In a detailed letter, we called on the agency to fully analyze and disclose a host of environmental and public health impacts associated with the mine and the San Juan Generation Station, to weigh alternatives that advance transition from coal to clean energy and more sustainable economies, and ultimately to set a deadline for shuttering and cleaning up the mine and power plant.
